The essential oil is obtained by the process of steam distillation, and depending up on the time taken for distillation it is categorized into five variants of the oil. The variant called ylang ylang complete is distilled for up to 20 hours.

The different parts of ylang ylang tree have been used in traditional medicines in its native countries.
