A roll on solves two problems at once when you travel. You are not carrying a bottle of concentrated oil and a separate carrier oil, and you are not trying to mix anything on a tray table. The dilution is done, the applicator is built in, and nothing leaks into a wash bag.
These are all 10ml roll ons, already diluted, so nothing needs mixing and no carrier oil is needed. Lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus, tea tree and frankincense are the single botanical ones. Stress Relief, Sleep Well, Breathe Easy, Health Guard and Migraine Manager are pre mixed blends.
They are well inside the carry on rules. Current TSA rules allow liquids in containers of 3.4 ounces or 100ml or less, in a single quart sized bag. A 10ml roll on is a tenth of that limit, so the whole collection fits in the bag with room to spare. No hold luggage, no decanting.
They cannot spill the way a dropper bottle can. A roller ball seals against the neck, so there is no pipette to leak and no cap to loosen at altitude. This is the practical reason most people who travel with aromatics end up on roll ons rather than bottles.
You apply them to a point, not a room. Wrists, temples, the back of the neck. That suits a plane, a hotel room or an office where diffusing is not an option.
The trade is choice. A roll on is fixed: you get one aroma at one strength. If you want to change either, you want bottles and a carrier oil, which is what the single essential oils range is for.
The single botanicals. Lavender is the softest and the most generally liked, and the one most people take for evenings away from home. Peppermint is the sharpest, cold and immediate. Eucalyptus is greener and more camphoraceous. Tea tree is medicinal and clean rather than pleasant. Frankincense is the resinous one: dry and balsamic, closer to incense, and the one that works best when you want something that does not smell like a product.
The pre mixed blends. Stress Relief, Sleep Well, Breathe Easy, Health Guard and Migraine Manager each combine several oils in fixed proportions. Their product pages list what is in each one, and it is worth reading them before you choose, because the aromas differ more than the names suggest.
If you prefer to pick by aroma rather than by name, the single botanicals are the straightforward place to start.
Roll a single pass onto a pulse point: inside the wrists, the sides of the neck, behind the ears. Skin is warm there, which carries the aroma. Then leave it. The most common mistake is reapplying every few minutes because you have stopped noticing the smell, which is your nose adapting rather than the product wearing off.
Follow the directions on each product for how often to apply. Keep roll ons away from eyes, from the inside of the nose, and from broken or irritated skin. If anything stings or reddens, stop using it.
Because these are already diluted, do not add anything to them. If you want to mix your own strength, start from a single oil and a carrier oil instead, and our safety and dilution guide covers the ratios.
Keep roll ons upright in a side pocket rather than loose at the bottom of a bag, and out of direct sun on a dashboard or a window seat tray. Heat is what degrades an aromatic blend fastest, and a hot car does more damage in an afternoon than a year in a cupboard.
For the wider range of pre diluted formats, including ones not built for travel, see the roll ons collection. Our travel aromatherapy guide covers what people tend to pack and why.
Every roll on here arrives already diluted in a carrier, which is the whole point of the format. Each product page lists the oils in that particular blend, and it is worth checking them rather than going by the name on the front, because two roll ons can share a category and smell nothing alike.
These roll ons are already diluted, but they are still aromatic products for external use on intact skin. Keep them away from eyes, the inside of the nose, and broken or irritated skin, and stop if anything stings or reddens. Peppermint and eucalyptus are both widely advised against around infants and young children. If you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication or managing a health condition, speak to a healthcare professional before use.
